I do not know Japanese, but according to Wikipedia rei means “spirit, miraculous, divine”. Many also interpret it as meaning “universal life”. Also thanks to Wikipedia ki means “gas, vital energy, breath of life, consciousness”. It is mostly because of the general meaning of the word reiki that I use it, not because I ascribe to specific practices of any branch of Reiki as it is generally taught, though I do move the energy in a similar way as is taught. I began doing reiki on myself around the age of 13, years before I had ever heard of Reiki. In 2009, when I was 27 I was certified Reiki I, though I am only now beginning to practice it professionally.
